John Mellencamp announces 2010 - 2011 tour dates and the No Better Than This Tour :
With initial tour dates for the first leg of the John Mellencamp No Better Than This Tour starting at the end of this month, a new set of John Mellencamp concert appearances that begin in February of next year has just been announced. The tour, designed as a uniquely formatted “evening with,” brings John Mellencamp music to theater-sized venues, a rare opportunity to experience one of America's most iconic songwriters and performers in an intimate setting, highlighting all phases of his artistry. The new No Better Than This Tour dates commence in early February in New England and continue on to two tour dates in Canada before heading south to tour dates New York, Washington, Philadelphia and into the Carolinas and Florida. Tickets for these dates go on sale Friday, October 15 at 10 AM.

The tour will feature classic John Mellencamp material associated with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee over the course of John Mellencamp's 35 year long career as well as the new music from No Better Than This. The album, released by Rounder Records, held the top spot on the Americana Music Chart for five straight weeks and was produced by T Bone Burnett. It was recorded in three historic locations in the American South: Savannah's First African Baptist Church, Sun Studio in Memphis and Room 414 of San Antonio's Gunter Hotel where Robert Johnson recorded in 1936. The sessions were documented on a 55-year-old mono tape recorder using just one vintage microphone at each location. Rolling Stone's review of the album noted, “John Mellencamp has never sounded looser or easier on a record,” suggesting the artist was “channeling spirits and stepping into period styles. They fit him perfectly." The Americana Music Association honored Mellencamp last month with its Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting, presented by Rosanne Cash. Musicians backing John Mellencamp include Michael Wanchic (guitar), Andy York (guitar), Miriam Sturm (violin), John Gunnell (electric and upright bass), Dane Clark (drums) and Troye Kinnett (accordion/keyboards).

Of special note is the fact that the tour's “opening act,” is a documentary film by Kurt Markus entitled It's About You. Shot on Super8 film over the course of last year's Bob Dylan, himself, Willie Nelson tour of minor league baseball stadiums, it chronicles the creation of No Better Than This while serving as a cinematic 'think piece' on the state of the country at the end of the first decade of the 21st Century. Markus, whose still work has put him in the front ranks of contemporary American photographers, has been cited for his extraordinary vision of his work documenting the American West and is the recipient of Life Magazine's Alfred Eisenstaedt Photography Award. Ticket holders are urged to get to their respective No Better Than This Tour venues on time to be on hand for the film's start.

John Mellencamp Extends North American Tour Dates Into 2011, adding to the present concerts and schedule :
John Mellencamp has announced additional tour dates and concerts to the No Better Than This North American tour, which also marks his first shows of 2011. The tour dates kicks off the schedule on February 3rd in Lowell, Massachusetts. No Better Than This was released in August and peaked at Number 10 on the Billboard 200. On October 16th, the singer will join Elton John, Leon Russell, Elvis Costello, and Gregg Allman, among others, to perform as part of T-Bone Burnett's Speaking Clock Revue at Boston's Wang Theatre at Citi Performing Arts Center.

T-Bone Burnett, who produced 2008's Life, Death Love, And Freedom and the new No Better Than This, says that he walked away from the sessions a bigger fan then ever of the singer as both an artist and a man: "I love th man, he is a powerful musician, and he rocks like crazy, I have to say. He's a really great singer -- we did the thing live on tour. He's a great storyteller, he's a great songwriter, he's a terrific painter. Y'know, he's made a beautiful life for himself up there in the woods of Indiana (laughs). He's never left. Now he's a little like the madman up in the woods."

John Mellencamp was born Oct. 7, 1951, in Seymour, Ind. He survived an early phase as a glam-rocker to become one of America's most successful mainstream rock singers of the 1980s. After playing in a local band, he was signed by David Bowie's manager Tony de Fries to a recording deal with MainMan in 1976. His name was changed to Johnny Cougar, and he was given a James Dean-style image, but a rush-released album of cover songs did not chart. He left MainMan and moved back to Indiana and recorded the self-penned The Kid Inside.

Shortly afterwards he signed to Riva Records, owned by Rod Stewart's manager Billy Gaff, who presented the singer as the next Bruce Springsteen. Mellencamp's first chart action came with the Top 30 single "I Need a Lover" in December 1979. He and his band toured constantly, a strategy which paid off in 1982 when his third Riva album, American Fool, topped the album chart, while "Hurts So Good" (which earned his only Grammy) and "Jack and Diane" were certified as gold singles.

The following year, John Mellencamp changed his billing to John Cougar Mellencamp, and his chart successes continued with Uh-Huh in 1983 and Scarecrow in 1985. Many of his songs were now dealing with social problems, and he was one of the organizers of the Farm Aid series of benefit concerts.
